’80s Rock Icon Rick Springfield Reaches Deal in DUI Arrest

Rick Springfield, ’80s rock icon and singer of “Jessie’s Girl,” has reached a deal with prosecutors relating to his May 2011 DUI arrest in Malibu.

On the same day that he appeared at the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books, Springfield was pulled over for speeding on Pacific Coast Highway. Officers then discovered that he was driving with a blood-alcohol level of 0.1%, which is over the legal limit of 0.08%.

When faced with the possibility of having his 1963 Corvette Stingray towed, Springfield threatened to kill the deputy; however, the L.A. County Sheriff’s Office downplayed the incident, claiming that it is rare to encounter someone who is driving drunk who is not abusive.

L.A. County sheriff’s spokesman Steve Whitmore stated that “Drunks say things all the time, and they say things that are ridiculous, notorious and vicious to cops…our job is to get them off the street so they don’t hurt other people. We don’t take whatever they say seriously.”

According to the Associated Press, Springfield pleaded no contest to reckless driving. He will be required to attend an alcohol education program and will face three years of probation; however, he won’t be facing any more jail time for his actions.
