Randy Travis: Naked, Drunk and Demanding Cigarettes, Charged With DWI

Country singer Randy Travis walked into a convenience store late on Tuesday, August 7th to buy a couple packs of cigarettes. The problem was that he forgot his wallet—and his pants.

Scott Robinson, who was the clerk at the time, stated that Travis ordered a couple packs of cigarettes like normal, except that he was buck naked. When asked what he was doing in the store naked, Travis demanded the cigarettes. Robinson then asked how he was planning to pay for the cigarettes, at which point Travis left the store.

Robinson notified police of the naked customer; they finally found him when they received a 911 call from a driver who stated that he noticed scattered cones and a man lying in the middle of the road west of Tioga, Texas.

Travis’ Pontiac Trans Am had been driven off the road and struck several construction cones. When Texas Department of Public Safety troopers arrived at the scene, they found Travis lying naked in the middle of the road.

According to a statement from the sheriff’s office, “Travis had a strong odor of alcoholic beverage on his breath and several signs of intoxication.” He refused to participate in sobriety tests, so a blood specimen was taken instead. While Travis was being transported, he threatened to shoot and kill the officers.

Travis was released on a $21,500 bond on Wednesday morning. He has been charged with driving while intoxicated, as well as a felony retaliation or obstruction charge, which carries a maximum penalty of up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000.

This is not Travis’ first arrest involving alcohol this year; he was charged with public intoxication in February after being found parked in front of a Baptist church with an open bottle of wine.
